Dr. Roy James Rinehart Foundation

The Roy James Rinehart Memorial Foundation was established in 1957 by the faculty, students and alumni of the University of Kansas City School of Dentistry and by support of local civic leaders to honor Dr. Roy J. Rinehart. Dr. Rinehart served as dean of the School of Dentistry from 1928 (when it was known as the Kansas City- Western Dental College) until his death in 1957.

Dr. Rinehart was a 1902 graduate of the Western Dental College and later served as a faculty member, stock holder and administrator. He was a delegate to the ADA from 1919 to 1946, president of the American Association of Dental Schools, and a fellow of the American College of Dentists. He served as president of the Western Dental Alumni Association, Kansas City Dental Society and Missouri Dental Association. He was a member of Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity and the Rho Chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Honorary Dental Fraternity.

Dr. Rinehart was an outstanding dentist, an educator of uncommon vision and energy, and a taskmaster who demanded the highest standards of educational performance and professional practice. Yet, he was a kind man, who made daily rounds of the Dental School to maintain a personal relationship with faculty, staff and students. He left a legacy of goodwill and profound respect, which endures today 40 years after his death.

It was Dr. Rinehart’s personal mission to elevate the UMKC School of Dentistry to the ranks of the world’s finest dental schools. It is the mission of the Roy James Rinehart Memorial Foundation to provide its successor, the UMKC School of Dentistry, with the financial resources needed to achieve his vision of excellence.

The Rinehart Foundation seeks to raise funds and build endowments in support of the mission and programs of the UMKC School of Dentistry. One of its major efforts has been to build scholarship endowments in support of dental and dental hygiene education. Today, the Foundation’s endowments stand at more than $7 million. Earnings from these endowments, in combination with other resources, enabled the school to award nearly $700,000 in scholarship assistance to UMKC dental and dental hygiene students.

The Foundation also supports the Rinehart and Robinson Professorships, research assistance for faculty and graduate students.
