Alan Glaros, Ph.D.

Dr. Alan Glaros is the Associate Dean for Basic Medical Sciences at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He earned a bachelor's degree with distinction and honors in psychology from Stanford University. He earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. From 1974 to 1984, he was at Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan) in the Department of Psychology. From 1984 to 1988, he was a faculty member and Director of Intern Training in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Florida. In 1988, he accepted an offer to join the faculty of the UMKC School of Dentistry, where he remained until Fall, 2004. Dr. Glaros has been an active researcher since graduate school, and he first became interested in pain and related dental issues while completing his internship. An encounter with a patient suffering from bruxism was the impetus for his first successful application for support from the National Institute of Dental Research. Since then, he has published extensively, and his CV lists over 200 papers, chapters, books, and presentations. At the present time, he is examining the role of parafunctional clenching in temporomandibular muscle and joint disorders and in tension-type headache and is actively involved in collaborative projects to understand the structure-property relationships of the tissues that make up the temporomandibular joint. In addition to research, he sees patients for treatment of chronic facial pains, teaches medical, dental, and graduate students, and assists with the research activities of colleagues.
