Transitioning into the Profession Ceremony for DDS Class of 2012 and DH Class of 2011

Transitioning into the Profession — The Beginning of a Tradition

On Friday June 4, 2010, the UMKC School of Dentistry hosted its first Transitioning into the Profession Ceremony to acknowledge the transition of the incoming junior DDS class and senior dental hygiene class into patient care stage of their education. A crowd of 500 family members and friends gathered in Pierson Auditorium on the UMKC campus. The Transitioning into the Profession Ceremony is comparable to white coat ceremonies that take place at many dental schools.

Following welcoming remarks by Dean Marsha Pyle, Dr. Jack Nelson, immediate past president of the UMKC School of Dentistry Dental Alumni Association and Dr. Bonnie Branson, president elect of the Missouri Dental Hygienists’ Alumni Association took turns at the podium to recognize the students’ academic accomplishments and charge them with maintaining the highest ethical standards throughout their personal and professional lives.  Power to the Wobblys provided Dr. Branson with the forum to impress upon the students the importance of remaining flexible yet committed to their personal and professional standards throughout their lives. In his remarks entitled The Journey Begins, Dr. Nelson spoke of the importance of public acknowledgment of the stages in the students’ professional growth and the privileges our profession is given to be a servant to all the people we come in contact with throughout our lives.

Classmates, family, friends and faculty looked on as class representatives of each class read the Codes of Ethics that their class had drafted. Each student signed the patient care-centered codes. Following signing the codes the members of the Dental Hygiene class of 2011 were presented with a new set of scrubs emblazoned with their name, the UMKC School of Dentistry and Departmental logo. The dental hygiene scrub sets were presented by Professor Kim Bray and Mrs. Dee Dee Arps, president of the UMKC Dental Hygienists’ Alumni Association.

Dr. R. Wayne Thompson, representing the UMKC Dental Alumni Association, Dr. Connie White, representing the American College of Dentists, and Dr. Tim Taylor, representing the International College of Dentists helped each of the junior dental students don their symbolic white coat. One of the most repeated comments of the afternoon was how proud the students looked in their white coats and how they seemed to walk with a professional swagger once the coats were over their shoulders.

The Codes of Ethics of each class have been framed and will hang at the entrance to the Dr. Robert and Mrs. Lucille Cowan Center for Clinical Care, the school’s patient care area, as a daily reminder to the students of the importance of maintaining ethical standards throughout every patient care appointment.

UMKC SOD faculty and staff had the opportunity to greet the students and their families during a reception in the second floor foyer of the School of Dentistry. Tours of the Dr. Robert and Mrs. Lucille Cowan Center for Clinical Care followed the ceremony.

Each member of the Dental Hygiene Class of 2011 and the DDS Class of 2012 extends their gratitude to the Rinehart Foundation, the Dental Alumni Association, the UMKC Dental Hygienists’ Alumni Association and Colgate Palmolive for their generous support in providing the scrub sets and white coats as well the reception.

The 2011 Transitioning into the Profession Ceremony is scheduled in Pierson Auditorium on Friday, June 3, 2011.
